Don't take our word for it. Turn on airplane mode.

Right now, mid-session — flip your tablet to airplane mode and keep playing. Practice still works, because your child's practice and progress live on your device; only the online extras (sync, two-device play, Writing Coach) wait for a connection. No cloud app can pass that test; ours is built to. Independent research by Internet Safety Labs found 96% of school apps send student data to third parties. The AcornSmarts app has no ads or trackers, we sell no data, and the app's own security policy lets its requests go only to its own site and our database provider, Supabase. What reaches Supabase: when a family or teacher signs in, the adult's email and display name and each child's nickname or first name, grade, avatar and progress numbers (a teacher can also add first names to a class roster); a student who joins a class with a class code sends the same child details, with no account.

A few features use outside services. Writing Coach sends a typed answer through our server to Anthropic's Claude model for scoring; AcornSmarts does not store the answer, and Anthropic deletes API data within 30 days under its published policy (longer only if its safety systems flag a request or the law requires). Two-device play uses Google's public connection server, which sees each device's IP address. Read-aloud and voice answers use the browser's own voice services, which some browsers run online. The app also checks once per launch whether Writing Coach is available; that check carries no child data. Every service is listed at acornsmarts.com/privacy-evidence. Writing Coach can also label an answer that seems to share private details or real-life distress; the child's words and the label stay on that device, show only in its parent dashboard behind the grown-ups gate, and are never sent to us or shown on a teacher screen. That gate is the family PIN if one is set, otherwise a multiplication question an older student could answer; on a shared device, anyone past it sees every profile's notes. Districts should review Writing Coach with their counsel before students use it; that review may call for parental-consent language. Open the app's “Where your child's data lives” privacy receipt to read what family cloud sync sends — an automated test checks that list against the family and reading sync code.

The app that works even if we're gone.

Ed-tech startups shut down, and cloud subscription apps die with their servers — taking a family's learning record with them. AcornSmarts can't do that to you, by construction. The learning app runs on your device: practice, progress, the Almanac, and every printable need no server, and there is no license check — the app never phones home for permission to run. Our test suite boots the whole app with the network dead and completes a practice round before any release ships. And your data's file formats are published as an open spec — the backup file is plain readable JSON, the Backpack code's grammar is documented character by character, and every printable is ordinary paper — so your child's record outlives any company, including ours. Read the spec: the AcornSmarts open file formats. The honest exception: optional online extras (device-to-device sync, the weekly email digest, Writing Coach) do need our server and would stop — your child's record would not.

The Old-Device floor — the hand-me-down tablet is welcomeYou shouldn't have to buy a new tablet for a kids' practice app. AcornSmarts is built lean on purpose — no 3D engine, no video streaming, no ad tech — so the whole app is a smaller download than a single short video clip, and an automated ceiling fails our build if it ever bloats. It runs on 2020-class browsers (Safari/iPadOS 14, Chrome 87, Firefox 78, Edge 88) — and iPadOS 14 reaches iPads sold as far back as 2014. Every release is scanned for newer-than-floor features before it ships. Honest limit: we haven't benchmarked every old tablet by hand, so we claim the floor our tests prove — small download, 2020-class browser support — not lab numbers we don't have.
